about

Hello everybody, I've got 2020 vision!!

"Head On A Swivel" is now my 5th solo album (an ACTUAL cd, NOT CD-R) and I couldn't be more proud of this thing. After many "fits and starts" we (Jeff King & I) got this thing done. Despite equipment breakdowns, a major relocation, the passing of my beloved English Setter (Dr. Wu) and life itself.......We got it done and boy was it ever FUN!!

It all started In January of 2019 (released Jan. 2020). I was getting a bit restless and felt like it was time to record some new music. It had been nearly 3 years since the last one (Pop-ti-mis-tic). But, did have anything to say? Well, I headed back to my music room with my trusty Guild JF55 acoustic and an empty notebook. A half an hour later I had the making's of a new and cool tune (Head On A Swivel). I thought..."Maybe I do have something here." So, I looked through my notes, old demos, scraps of paper with ideas on them and got to work. I notified my musical partner that I was ready to record....he was in and excited about it!

I love the collection of tunes that I came up with on this record. I don't know if it's my best or not (That's up to the listeners out there) but, I sure love 'em. They might just be my most consistent collection to date. Most of them are newly written, some are old idea's that I finally finished. It's all steeped from the 60's, 70's feel, with a modern production and a nice edge to the tracks. Jeff King played great bass and guitar stuff AND mixed the album....very nicely. Nick Landis @ Nick Landis Mastering, in Austin, Texas did a great Mastering job. He really makes this stuff POP.

So, I hope you enjoy this cd as much as we did making it. It's a definitely a labor of love from my standpoint.
Cheers, and thanks to all of the good folks out there that have supported my musical......."Electronic Noise" for many, many years. Grateful would be an understatement!!

NICE REVIEW from Beverly Paterson -

Heavy on mouth-watering melodies, arresting licks, clear & confidant vocals.
Gary Ritchie began his career in the late ’70s with the Chicago-based Loose Lips. Steady gigs and the regional hit Hung Up On Pop turned the band into local stars.
For the past several years, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist – who now resides in Texas – has been cutting records under his own name. Fellow multi-instrumentalist Jeff King, another member of Loose Lips, lends his time and talent to Gary’s projects as well.
You always know what you’re in for when you pick up a Gary Ritchie album, and Head On a Swivel (Fancy Two/Tone Records) is no exception. Here’s a guy who proudly and loudly flaunts his influences, and is as seriously good as the artists he was weaned on.
Casting a net toward both the British Invasion sounds of the ’60s and the power popping new wave tricks and kicks of the latter day ’70s and early ’80s, the material on Head On a Swivel synthesizes these inspirations in an impressively mettlesome manner riding high on energy and excitement.
Punctured with a Mersey-minted guitar solo primed to make your heart sing, the title track of the album will be embedded in your brain cells for eternity. Teeming with romantic optimism and cleverly-chiseled breaks, “Maybe It’ll Be Tonight,” along with the impossibly infectious “Four Letter Word,” the sparkling melancholy of “Lean On You,” the shake and stirred “Emergency Time” and the pseudo-country flavored “Blondes & Bullets” serve as other dandy ditties heard on the collection.
Guaranteed to incite chuckles, “Record Store” tells the tale of meeting a girl in a music shop looking at a Rick Springfield album. The narrator tries to win her over, but she is put off by his obsessive vinyl habit, as he waxes on and on about rare treasures. Among these finds are a Dave Clark Five box set found in Peter Noone’s basement that was bought on eBay and autographed by all five members of the band – and an unreleased Kinks album on pink vinyl recorded when the band’s frontman was a trombone player. To be sure, Head On a Swivel is not short on humor!
Heavy on handclaps, choppy drums, mouth-watering melodies, arresting licks and clear and confident vocals, Head On a Swivel brings back the fun in pop music. Gary Ritchie really knows his stuff, and he has once again produced a righteously retro masterpiece.

Classic melodies that stick in your brain. Highly Recommended!
Gary Ritchie “Head On A Swivel”

Gary Ritchie is a classic power-pop artist, similar in style to Jamie Hoover or Gary Frenay whose music can light up the room, and lift your mood instantly. The Beatle wig on the cover offers a clue, that Ritchie has a fab sense of songwriting. “Maybe It’ll Be Tonight” does this with a Raspberries-like guitar riff and a chorus that sticks fast to your brain. Next, the title track has echoes of McCartney as it bounces along, and “Emergency Time” is another classic melody with handclaps and punchy percussion.

The album continues to deliver excellent music quickly and cleanly with “Here We Go Again” and “False Alarm.” The tone slows down on the semi-tropical “Lean On You,” but it’s a momentary pause as “Arms Around A Memory,” “Matter of Time,” and “You” are brilliant songs that round out this album. “Record Store” is a great little vignette about trying to pick up a girl at the local shop, and it reminds me a bit of Lannie Flowers. Almost every song hits the mark and after a few spins, it will quickly become your new favorite LP. It’s hard to argue that this shouldn’t be in the top ten for 2020 — and of course, Highly Recommended. 9/10

I can’t believe I somehow missed the release of Gary Ritchie’s Head on a Swivel early in 2020. This record is maximum fun in a meat and potatoes poprock sort of way. Ritchie has all the chops, from Merseybeat to 1980s American indie rock and roll, delivering an album that is as listenable as any Greg Kihn or Tom Petty release. And yet there is something distinctively English about the overall sound to me. So many of the songs have that 1965 beat group feel, passed through an ELO sonic retro filter. Just hit play on the title track or “Lean On You” or “Four Letter Word” to get what I’m banging on about here. Or for a more American 1980s poprock elan check out “Maybe It’ll Be Tonight” or “Arms Around a Memory.” Personally I love the roll out to “Tunnel of Love” with its ringing guitar and handclaps – and the rest of the song is pretty great too. Rounding this out, “Record Store” is a hilarious closer. So, all in all, for retro melodic rock fans, Head on a Swivel is a can’t-go-wrong purchase.

Gary Ritchie Texas

Gary's "real" instrument would be drums. But, he is a full, fledged Pop guy. Plays most of the instruments & vocals on his albums. Along with Jeff King who plays bass & guitar on all the albums. A former Chicagoan now living in Austin, Texas. Loves a melody with a Big-Beat behind it. With 5 full length solo cd's behind him, he's loving the freedom of recording what and when he wants. So enjoy! ... more
